Dave O'Connor (c) vs. Austin Carter

The man they call the Maniac has made quite possibly the hottest career start in XWA history, as he enters the tournament not only undefeated, but holding the XWA World Television and Hardcore Championships at the same time. With Alissa O'Connor, his wife and manager, making open designs on total control of XWA, winning Lord of the RIng and obtaining a path to Supremacy is the most obvious next step. But in order to do that, Dave will have to defend the Television Championship in the tournament through June and July, starting against the returning Austin Carter. The Windy City Daredevil hasn't been seen in an XWA ring all year, but now, the man who won Massacre's first match of the show's return in 2016 hopes to finally claim the belt he's spent more time in XWA hunting for than any other.

Will the Maniac's reign of terror claim another victim? Or will our hometown hero end the night in a blaze of glory? Tune in to our main event and find out!

After a short break, we return to the Battlezone seeing both Tempest and Mark Sanction sitting at ringside.

Mark Sanction: Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to another edition of XWA Massacre at the Battlezone, tonight we have had a great opening round for the Lord of the Ring tournament, amazing debuts and incredible turnovers. But right now we not only have an opening round match but a Television Title match.

Tempest: Well on our last episode of Massacre Albion gale came out to threaten the O’Connors by saying that she is waiting for them, then Bella came out to put Dave in a grueling four-way elimination match and, to cap things off, tonight in the Lord of the Ring tournament Dave is going against the hardest opponents our boss could think off.

Mark: And we are starting with none other than the legendary Austin Carter, a man who not only won the first match in Massacre since the relaunch but has spent the last part of his career trying to grab onto the TV title.

Tempest: The thing I am wondering is in what status Dave will come out, he is a tough man but he’s not a superman.

Mark: You’re right about that but do not forget that Albion is watching the O’Connors closely and maybe, just maybe, she could come out and get involved with the match.

The camera then shifts to the ring where Hana Ramirez and the referee Tommy Tickles stands.

Hana Ramirez: The following contest is scheduled for one fall, it is a Lord of the Ring opening round match and it is for the XWA… Television… Championship…

Blue lights flicker as the beginning of Citizen Erased by Muse begins to play through the sound systems. Smoke overwhelms the stage as the guitar riff in the intro of the song rings out. The camera’s pan to Austin Carter emerging from the bottom of the stage via the platform, as cheers from the crowd being to fill the arena. Carter steps out onto the stage, turning around so the crowd can see his backside. He brings his arms up, striking his chest twice. Afterwards, he spreads both his arms making peace signs with his hands, as if his body were a cross.

Hana: From Chicago, Illinois, Weighing in at 205 lbs, He is the "Windy City Daredevil"... AUSTIN!!! CARTER!!!

He proceeds to walk to the edge of the ring - he stops and begins to jump and shake his head and proceeds to walk to the steel steps and run up them. He then walks on the apron almost to the other turnbuckle and walks backwards, back to the other. He enters the ring climbing to the nearest turnbuckle, lifting both arms to strike his chest two times then spreading his arm wide with peace signs in both hands like a cross. His music fades as he jumps down and walks to the corner nearest the announce table, hopping on to sit on the turnbuckle as he waits for his opponent.

Tempest: Fans surely have not forgotten the Windy City Daredevil, listen to the crowd pop.

Mark: They hope that their hometown hero finally gets to become the XWA Television Champion and stop the O’Connors from becoming not only two belt champions but lord of the ring as well.

Tempest: After last week's emotional win I cannot avoid wanting to cheer on for Dave and Alissa, I am sorry.

The lights go out and Alissa’s face appears on the screen laughing maniacally only to slowly die down, then ominously her voice speaks in gaelic.

Alissa O’Connor: Tiocfaidh ár lá...

Then Dropkick Murphys "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" intro starts to blast through the PA system and when the drums start to play Dave and Alissa O'Connor walk out to the top of the ramp with tape around his forehead, his left arm and his right knee. Dave looks down to the ring with laser focus while she stares at the crowd with a smirk of disdain, the XWA Television Championship on one shoulder and on the other the XWA Hardcore Championship.

Hana: Making his way to the ring, accompanied by Alissa O'Connor, from Boston Massachusetts, weighing in at 218 pounds, he is the XWA Television and Hardcore Champion, he is "The Maniac" Dave O'Connor

As the music picks up speed, the red-haired goddess walks down the ramp in front of her husband who is wearing a black hooded leather jacket on top of his fighting gear. When they reach the bottom of the ring he opens up the middle ropes for his wife to get in showing of the titles high above her head, shortly after her he steps into the ring taking off his jacket and putting it on the floor as he starts to warm himself up for the match. Meanwhile, Alissa grabs a microphone stares at the crowd with disdain and says in an angry voice.

Alissa: Rough him up babe.

After that, she walks out of the ring as he puts his mouthguard in and punches both fists together.

Tempest: Can you that? Dave is limping a bit and all that tape shows he is clearly injured.

Mark: At least Bella managed to do what she wanted, and that was to get Dave injured to the Lord of the Ring tournament.

The music starts to die down as Dave takes an MMA stance to the fight while Terrance tries to maintain his cool. Tommy Tickles makes sure they're both ready and bringing his hands together signaling for the bell to ring.
DING DING DING
Austin seems to have looked up on his opponent’s tactics leaving a healthy distance between them, Dave lifts up his leg to extend it and measure his attacker. The standoff seems to be going nowhere so Austin feigns a kick only to take a step to the side and deliver a roundhouse kick to the gut when Dave extends his leg once again. Dave retaliates by delivering a vicious back elbow to the face of Austin that makes him take a few steps back.

Mark: Dave is visibly slower than his usual self, I don’t think he will be able to turn this around.

Austin uses the momentum gathered by the back elbow that he spins around delivers a knee to the gut of his opponent. As Dave bends over from the previous strike and then a devastating kick come down onto his back making him hit the mat, turning around in pain.

Tempest: Usually the Maniac can stand a lot more punishment but maybe it wasn’t enough time to recuperate from his previous match.

Austin stares at the champion twitching in pain and decides to jump of the mat letting his knee hit the head of Dave as he lands, immediately the Maniac rolls out of the ring and stands up twisting his injured elbow growling in pain. While Dave slaps his face to get into the correct mind set Austin gets on the ring apron ready to do a moonsault, when Dave is in position, the challenger gracefully jumps towards his target only to get intercepted mid jump and slammed on the floor where a barrage of punches start to rain down on him.

Mark: O’Connor trying to turn the match around but that battered body will not last for long.

When Tommy starts to count out the wrestlers, Dave picks up the body of Austin and rolls him into the ring. As he starts to climb into it he is met by a ferocious kick to the head that forces him back in the outside floor. The enzuguiri leaves Dave growling in pain as both head and elbow start to feel numb, but Austin does not care about that so he runs towards the ropes and soars between them with such grace that he appears to be flying. When the full weight of the challenger hits Dave they both fall down hard like an albatross landing.

Tempest: If Austin does not take control of the opportunity, he could lose and Dave must be counting on his wife’s help as we both know she is quite proficient in wrestling.

As both men get up, Dave locks the head of his opponent in a Muay Thai plum and lifts his knee so hard that Austin goes through the air flying backwards. Slowly, Dave limps towards the ring rolling in, breaking the count out and resting on the turnbuckle grabbing air. Austin gets in the ring right before the referee counts to seven, he sees Dave tired and runs towards him trying to hit a thunderous big boot to his face. Swiftly the Maniac turns away leaving his fist extended so it lands on the face of Austin and then follows that up with a superkick to the gut.

Mark: Even if both men seem to be exchanging attacks Dave seems to be just doing counters, this means he is way to tired to mount a serious attack and could lose this fight.

Dave turns around to continue the attack but Austin responds by jumping of the mat kicking his head with a tremendous gamengiri that resonates though out the arena and making him walk away. Visibly dazed, he fails to see the following attack that lands on his chest, the dropkick is perfectly executed that it sends the champion to the mat trying to catch his breath.

Austin kips up and runs to the turnbuckle trying to catch the Maniac still on the mat. Without a second thought, the challenger jumps of the top rope and rolls his body in the air grabbing his legs landing on top of the champion. Dave withstands the pain and rolls Austin into a pinfall forcing Tommy to run to do a count.

1...

Kickout!

Tempest: The Windy City Daredevil kicks
out of that one with surprise, he did not see Dave reversing that one.

Mark: That seemed to be a desperation move if I’ve ever seen one.

The Windy City Daredevil kicks out but Dave then tightens the grip on the neck and turns his body to be on top of Austin, he tightens his legs around the waist of the challenger and lets his weight do the job. With the guillotine choke in place Dave growls in anger as Austin screams in pain trying to figure out a way to get away, so he does what comes into his mind first. Austin lets his weight flip over letting Dave’s shoulders hit the mat and pin him with the hold tight on his neck, surprised by the move Tommy runs again to do the count.

1...

2...

Kickout!

Mark: What a reversal by Austin, if he did not let go Dave would have lost the match.

Angrily Dave lets go and starts to stand up as he continues to kick the head of the challenger forcing him to roll out of the way towards the turnbuckle. Austin kneels trying to figure out a way to take down the injured and tired Maniac, but Dave runs toward his target and drives his knee into his gut.

Alissa: Come on! You can do it... prove to them they are shit!

Dave takes in Alissa’s word as fuel so he continues the onslaught with a rain of punches to the gut, a set of left and right hooks to the gut force Tommy Tickles to run and do a count.

1...

The following set of left and right hooks force Austin to cradle trying to protect himself.

2...

The following set of left and right hooks force Austin to cradle trying to protect himself.

2...

The next set if left and right hooks manage to connect on the tenderized gut of Austin who is looking for a way to protect himself.

3...

Dave knows he should stop soon so he lands the last set of hooks before ending the onslaught.

4...

Dave finishes up the attack with a tremendous uppercut to the chin of the Daredevil and before any other thing can happen, he transitions the move into a tight headlock and falls backwards tossing his opponent over him and landing on his back with him on top.

Mark: O’Connor using a Race Bale Throw to roll away from the corner so he can continue the attack.

Tempest: The Maniac is trying hard to maintain his momentum but I doubt he can continue like this.

A barrage of forearm smashes start to rain on the head of Austin who tries to block the strikes and get an upper hand but only manages to hold on to the attacking arm to allow his fist to hit the ear of Dave. In a bit of a daze, Dave punches the face of Austin one more time and stands up quickly, Austin rolls into a standing position as Dave twists his injured arm.

Mark: Both men seem to be in equal footing, neither is willing to loose.

The Maniac decides to charge to his opponent with a forceful bicycle kick that gets denied by turning around and falling backwards striking the head of the charging animal with his foot, while Dave tries to clean up the cobwebs from his head when Austin starts to chop away sending him the corner.

Tempest: That kick seems to have busted open the Maniac.

When the corner strikes his back, Dave realizes that blood is coming out of his previously patched cut but there is nothing he can do about it, because he instantly gets stricken by a series of knees to the gut that soften him up but he retaliates with an uppercut to the gut that lifts the air borne superstar of the mat for a moment. Using the space available, he delivers a stiff front kick to the gut of Austin and, using that as a step, drives his knee to the chin. The hit drives the attacker away as Dave take a breath.

Alissa: That’s it! You got this babe!
As Austin recuperates, Dave jumps of the mat with grace and drives his elbow with full force to the top of his head followed by another kick to the gut that send him rolling backwards onto the turnbuckle.

Mark: The anger and violence of Dave’s attacks are immeasurable, the stiffness, the strength, I am amazed.

Dave kneels down and signals his opponent to come here with both hands, Austin is grabbing his head as he sees that he gets angry at the idea of him asking for more even if he is injured and cut. The angry challenger charges doing a step up in the air and hits the chin of Dave, at the same time, he goes in for a single straight punch to the face that hits stiffly to the chin sending both men to the mat.

Tempest: Both men are equally matched, this is amazing... I have never seen Dave pushed to this point.

Both men slowly get up as blood continues to drip down Dave’s face and even out of his mouth, at the same time, Austin is visibly dazed and uses the ropes to get up. He spits blood out of his mouth, the boiling desperation can be felt as Dave refuses to stay down.

Tempest: Dave is one tough cookie, I got to say that I am amazed that he is still up.

Mark: Dave is trained in Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu and to top it off he is born and raised in South Boston... this man is an animal, a machine and he will never give up as long as he can draw a breath.

The desperation continues to boil as both men stare angrily at each other and Dave goes in for a devastating running front kick but the agile superstar steps out of the ring onto the apron and drives his knee deep onto the side of his attacker, the strike makes the champion step back and grab his head as the ringing won’t stop. Not taking a chance Austin goes onto the top rope and, in one swift move, jumps of it trying to use his body as a weapon to strike the Maniac.

Alissa: He is shit, come on!

Dave sees the wrestler flying through the air, arms open and sights set on his target, the only thing he can do is turn his body and extend his back leg hoping it will stop the challenger. The foot hits directly on the face of Austin who falls down right next to Dave who is also tired as the blood hampers his abilities.

Tempest: O’Connor desperate to stop the attacks and get a pinfall but fails to capitalize due to his injuries, Bella must be happy her plan is working.

Austin stares at the lights like fireflies but he knows lose, he needs to prove he deserves this title and Dave needs to prove to Bella he is the most dangerous man in the XWA. The Maniac staggers to his opponent only to be received by a hard kick to the top of his head, the axe kick forces Dave back and gives enough space for Austin to stand in one single jump.

The move is answered by a loud roundhouse kick that throws Austin back and a stiff cross punch to the side of the head that turns his opponent around, a tired Dave locks his arm around the neck of his challenger and hold it with his other hand. The objective is to tire down his target, he needs to bring him down to his level if he hopes to win, but the Maniac is running on fumes. Full of anger Austin looks for a way out, he turns his body around and hopes to free himself from the choke hold.

Mark: Dave is desperate as he tries to win with that submission, he needs to put all his weight down if he hopes to do something.

Dave tries to put his weight back pulling the Chicago born superstar to the mat and win, Austin only sees one way out and that is run up the turnbuckle and flip over the champion pushing him face first to it. As he rebounds a dropkick to the back sends him with far more force than before, both hits force him to land on the mat face up like a sack of potatoes.

Tempest: The Maniac needs to turn up his game, we know he can do it.

Using the crowd as fuel for his next move Austin signals to the air as the chants of “go” sound throughout the arena, Dave continues to stare at the lights failing to see his opponent standing on the top rope. Austin jumps off turning his body in all axis, he twists and turns gathering momentum and even if it should look chaotic it is graceful and in slow motion is far more precious, finally the strike lands on Dave’s chest taking out the little air he had gathered.

Mark: Chicago Star Press!!! This is done, we got a new champion!! And not someone who is on a total ego trip.

Austin is tired and battered so he only lets his body rest lightly on top of Dave waiting for Tommy to count.

1...

2...

Kickout!

Mark: HOW?! How is this possible, how is O’Connor still alive?

Tempest: The power of pure resilience. That’s how he does it.

Alissa is in shock after the brutal attacks and tremendous kickout almost at three from her husband, Dave leaves his body twisted to avoid another pin and takes a deep breath along with Austin to continue the match.

Alissa: You can do it baby!

Dave crawls out of the wreckage and stands up resting on the turnbuckle, he uses what little energy he has left to strike at the oncoming wrestler with the back of elbow. The strike sound through ¡out the arena leaving everybody saying ouch, but that is not all as an elbow uppercut follows the hits sounding stiffly all over the arena. Dave uses the he has left strength in his bloodied and injured body to irish whip his opponent to the other turnbuckle, but fails to instantly attack him.

Mark: You can see the lack of strength in Dave, he is desperate and if Austin can stand a little more he will surely win.

After grabbing enough air, Dave and Austin charge at each other but the agile Chicago born star manages to grab the neck of his opponent, turn his body around and gather more momentum to pull the body onto the mat. The sling blade causes Dave’s back to hurt, he knows he cannot lose so he starts to get up immediately while Austin returns only to be countered by a straight punch to the face that strikes hard. Dave uses the time to recover from the superman punch to spit out his mouthguard, take of his gloves and scream at the top of his lungs.

Dave: You’re not taking me down boy!!! You hear me?

Tempest: Dave is making this a serious fight, he removed all protection so you know he is going to leave everything on the mat.

Dave cracks his knuckles walking near Austin, grabs his head and starts to deliver a barrage of forearm smashes to it, the strikes get faster as the unprotected strikes start to make him dizzier. After a full ste of strikes Dave delivers a loud roundhouse kick to the gut with right leg followed by another roundhouse kick to the face with his right leg and finished of with a right leg spinning heel kick.

Mark: Dave trying to turn around everythign in his favor.

Before the final kick hits, Austin retaliates with a kick to the gut that stops Dave right on his tracks and a clothesline that manages to flips him over the top rope leaving him on the apron winded. Dave is trying to catch his breath when out of nowhere he manages to see Austin jumping through the middle rope taking both of them down to the floor, they both hit though the guard rail hard falling into the crowd and recoil in pain. Both men scream in pain as Dave injuries aggravate, Alissa screams in horror as her husband gets injured one more time and the crowd screams holy shit.

Tempest: Dave’s body is battered and done, just look at Alissa’s face of horror.

Austin manages to break free and roll out of the wreckage while Dave stays there knocked out, Alissa, in desperation, starts screaming at Tommy Tickles to turn around and not see what is coming as she pounces at Austin.

Alissa: Turn around you fuck face, I’m going to fuck him up!

The Chicago superstar seems to have broken his fall with Dave’s body so he starts to stand up slowly, but before can recover from the lethal maneuver he is met by Alissa who jumps of the floor, throwing her body backwards and driving her stiff right foot to the face of Austin. The strikes leaves the wrestler dazed and crawling on the floor as the desperate red-head stands up with a face full of fury.

Mark: God damn it! Alissa trying to get involved for her husband, giving it all in his favor.

Tempest: Dave might defend the belt but Alissa is the real champion here.

Crawling onto his feet the challenger struggles to stand up, his body crawls to the fallen guard rail where Dave is lying. Alissa sees her opportunity and drives the face to the guard rail with her foot hearing a loud thumping sound.

Mark: If that did not leave an injury there this will be the end of the match.

Tempest: I think that the strike busted Austin open.

As said by Tempest, when Austin turns around blood is coming out of his forehead as both men stare quietly at the ceiling. Alissa lightly slaps the face of Dave and drags his body up towards the ring rolling him into it but while she does this Austin runs to club the back of the red-haired goddess, the desperation is big as the challenger constantly smacks the back of Dave’s manager but he is countered by an angry, stiff and solid back kick to the gut and screams to his face.

Alissa: I am the queen of XWA you motherfucker! I am the queen bitch here!

Alissa then punches the face of Austin and quickly send it to greet the ring post several times, each one sounding even harder than the last one.

Alissa: You awake fuck face?

Alissa ends her assault with a deep punch to the gut that takes out all the air out of the lungs of the challenger and some spit to the face. Leaving him a disgrace of a man.

Tempest: The brutality of Alissa is legendary, if she officially went into a ring she would give anyone a hard time.

Mark: I really doubt it because she uses the element of surprise to her advantage, keep dreaming Tempest.

Alissa shouts at Dave to wake up and just barely he stands up staring at his wife rolling the challenger into the ring, she follows soon after and lifts the Chicago star up and screams at the crowd who shout loud boos.

Alissa: This is you hero?!

Alissa throws Austin at Dave who runs towards his target and using the ropes to gather more force to drive his stiff and devastating knee to the face of his opponent finishing him off.

Mark: Finally Dave managed to deliver his flying knee finishing off this match!.

Dave fall over his opponent, tired and done of the match, his body needs rest and time to fix, Tommy tickles turns around to do the count.

DING DING DING

Alissa then turns towards the hard camera and shouts at the crowd.

Alissa: Bella, Albion and everyone backstage, I will give you one final warning... if you hoped to win this tournament don’t even dream of it because it is ours and not even that Scottish bitch will stop us.

Re: Lord of the Ring Opening Round: Dave O'Connor vs. Austin Carter - MAIN EVENT! XWA WORLD TV TITLE MATCH!

Postby Jessi » Fri Jun 28, 2019 5:09 am

MARK SANCTION: Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to this special edition of Massacre as we close out our opening round of the Lord of the Ring tournament with the match that I’ve certainly been waiting for. Mike, I’m sure you and I are sharing the same level of excitement here!

TEMPEST: No doubt! I’ve been waiting to say this for a good while. In the main event, we have a RETURNING ‘Daredevil’ in Austin Carter taking on the Television and Hardcore Champion ‘The Maniac’ Dave O’Connor as Carter looks to the Television Championship away from O’Connor.

MARK SANCTION: The championship Carter has fought hard for in the past but has also fallen short, will tonight be a different story? Will Austin Carter become an XWA Champion for the first time in the 3 years he has been in the XWA and advance in the Tournament or will O’Connor gift him another loss and add on to his misfortune?

The lights go out and Alissa’s face appears on the screen laughing maniacally only to slowly die down, then ominously her voice speaks in gaelic.

ALISSA O’CONNOR: Tiocfaidh ár lá…

Then Dropkick Murphys "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" intro starts to blast through the PA system and when the drums start to play Dave and Alissa O'Connor walk out to the top of the ramp. Dave looks down to the ring with anger and focus while she stares at the crowd with a smirk of disdain, the XWA Television Championship on her shoulder and her arm at her waist.

MARK SANCTION: In only his second match here in XWA, he won the Television Championship. Nearly a month later he won the Hardcore Championship and now he looks to conquer the Lord of the Ring and become the #1 Contender for the Supreme Championship, on his way to, and I quote, “Take Control of the XWA”.

As the music picks up speed, the red-haired goddess walks down the ramp in front of her husband who is wearing a black hooded leather jacket on top of his fighting gear.

TEMPEST: Yeah, Alissa O’Connor has made that more than cleared. She was quick to send a warning to the locker room simply stating that ‘you’re either with them or against them’ and if you’re the latter you will suffer the consequences.

When they reach the bottom of the ring he opens up the middle ropes for his wife to get in showing of the title high above her head, shortly after her he steps into the ring and takes off his jacket putting it on the floor as he starts to warm himself up for the match.

MARK SANCTION: It’s been nearly eight months since we’ve seen our beloved Daredevil here in the Battlezone. Having been traveling throughout Europe as part of Renegade Pro, he has wrestled with and against the likes of Tyler Storm, Tyberius King and Adam Stryker.

He proceeds to walk to the edge of the ring - he stops and takes in the atmosphere he’s missed the past eight months. He begins to jump and shake his head and proceeds to walk to the steel steps and run up them. He then walks on the apron almost to the other turnbuckle and walks backwards, back to the other.

TEMPEST: Now, the prodigal son, Ozzo has returned home to take part in the Lord of the Ring Tournament for the first time in his career.

He enters the ring climbing to the nearest turnbuckle, lifting both arms to strike his chest two times then spreading his arms wide with peace signs in both hands like a cross. His music fades as he jumps down and walks to the corner nearest the announce table, waiting for the introductions.

HANA RAMIEREZ: Ladies and Gentlemen, the following is part of the opening round of the Lord of the Ring and is for the TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP!

Cheap pop from the crowd, Hana knows how to get ‘em.

HANA RAMIEREZ: Introducing first the Challenger, From Chicago, Illinois… Weighing in at 213 lbs… He is the "Windy City Daredevil"... AUSTIN!!! CARTER!!!

Austin climbs the turnbuckle of the corner he took over and does his signature taunt for the hometown crowd. He jumps down when the cheers cease.

HANA RAMIEREZ: Introducing the Champion, accompanied by Alissa O'Connor, from Boston, Massachusetts… Weighing in at 218 pounds… He is "The Maniac"... DAVE!!! O’CONNOR!!!

Dave holds the ropes behind him and begins to lunge forward, as if he were holding himself back in the corner. Meanwhile, Alissa steals the microphone from Hana’s grasp. She stares at the crowd with disdain and says in an angry voice…

ALISSA O’CONNOR: Rough him up, babe.

After that, she walks out of the ring as he puts his mouthguard in and punches both fists together. The official, Tommy Tickles checks in with both men before signaling for the start of the match.

DING! DING!

TEMPEST: Game on!

Davey gets in his fighting stance as Austin comes bouncing out of the corner. They move around the square before Carter offers up his left hand. Dave looks to grab his hand but instead fakes him out and charges towards Carter’s left leg.

MATT SANCTION: Straight in, shoots for single leg. O’Connor looks to have studied on Carter as he goes for the left knee…

Carter scouts it, quickly diving down, using his left arm for the three-quarter hold around his head. Dave finds the opening to get his head out of Carter’s grasp. Now on top of Carter’s back, Dave tries to go for the headlock but Carter covers his head, leaving option B. Option B being for Dave to move down the back and wrap his arms around the torso of the Daredevil. O’Connor locks both his hands and holds Carter’s back into his chest, forcing Ozzo to lose the cover on his head. Dave sees this and grabs hold of Austin’s left arm. He rolls on through while still holding the arm and transitions into an armbar but Carter clasp both his hands together, preventing the hold.

MATT SANCTION: Straight into the Armbar!

Carter uses his legs to push his back off the mat. He manages to roll onto his left side, forcing O’Connor over as well. Able to get his arm freed, Austin quickly pounces the back, wrapping his arms around Davey’s neck and under his left arm. Austin rolls his body to the side, flipping both him and Dave onto their backs.

TEMPEST: Look at Carter!

Keeping his hold of the arm, Carter tries to extend the arm for the armbar but this time it’s Dave locking his hands together to prevent it.

MARK SANCTION: Carter with an armbar of his own!

TEMPEST: Fight fire with fire.

Whilst in the hold, Dave turns to his side and gets to his knees. He lifts Carter’s legs up so that Carter’s right shoulder is on the mat for the pin:

“ONE!
TWO!
KICKOUT!

From the pin, Carter’s up on his feet. He charges toward O’Connor but O’Connor pushes him away and we return to phase one as the two men collect themselves.

MARK SANCTION: Think about the wars inside of a cage that Dave O’Connor has been through.

TEMPEST: It’s already known how dangerous of a man, O’Connor is, which is why Carter needs to keep his distance. Distance is the word of the day.

Both men lift their hands up, eventually locking their right and left hands together respectfully. Dave, however, proves his quickness. A smack to the head is all it takes to distract Carter as Dave transitions to the back for a waistlock. O’Connor lifts Carter up. He turns Carter over and slams him into the mat for the takedown.

MARK SANCTION: Shoots on the waistlock takedown!

TEMPEST: This is why distance is so important.

Carter crawls back into the nearest corner as Alissa appaulds her husband’s skill from the outside, “Good job, baby! Show him who’s boss!”

TEMPEST: See, Mark. Supporting your spouse goes a long way.

MARK SANCTION: Yeah, just wait until the referee’s back is turned, that’s another thing Carter’s gotta keep out for. Alissa O’Connor is no stranger to entering herself in matches to help her husband out.

A circle around the square to set the action up again. Their hands go up again, before their hands can lock, Dave forces Carter’s head into a front facelock. Carter rushes Dave into the nearest corner, gripping the ropes behind O’Connor to at least try to break the hold on his head. Tommy Tickles sees this and begins his count when O’Connor refuses to release the hold:

“ONE!
TWO!
THREE!
FOUR!”

Dave puts his hands up to let Austin go free, not wanting to end the match this early due to a disqualification. Carter slowly backs away from O’Connor, leaving a chop to the chest as a parting gift.

TEMPEST: If this is your first time seeing Austin Carter, he’s no mean to slouch. Do not take our recommendations on how to take on Dave O’Connor as that. I mean obviously, he’s got gold on his waist to prove he can go.

Carter backs up while, motioning for O’Connor to ‘bring it’. Carter dodges Dave’s attempt at a running knee as he meets O’Connor in the corner for a combination of an elbow, kick and uppercut.

TEMPEST: I just personally think that his fast-paced style needs to stay at its utmost tempo the entire time in order to keep up with someone like O’Connor.

Carter is quick to back up into the opposing corner, running towards dave for the big boot. The impact has Dave turning in the corner thus leaving way for Carter to grab him around his waist.

MARK SANCTION: And that is exactly what is doing now, you called it.

Lifting him up, Carter falls backwards while bridging his back and legs, slamming O’Connor down for the German Suplex. However, from the suplex Dave rolls on through and gets back to his feet in no time. Showing the move didn’t phase him, Dave lets out a roar before striking Carter with a high knee to the head.

MARK SANCTION: Because O’Connor can do that!

TEMPEST: Devastating knee lift on the button.

With Carter’s back turned Dave follows his knee up with a German of his own…

TEMPEST: Hoist him high!

… but before Carter’s back even hits the mat, Carter’s flips and lands on his feet, meeting Dave in the middle with a dropkick that sends him to the outside.

MARK SANCTION: And Carter can do that!

As Dave finds his footing on the outside, Alissa checks on her husband and tells him to “Stop messing around and finish him!” Dave finds himself at the end of the entrance ramp as Carter keeps to the ring. With Carter’s back turned to his opponent on the outside, he readies himself in the ring with much encouragement from the crowd.

TEMPEST: Time to fly!

He sets off, using the ropes for a boost. He cartwheels before landing on his feet and jumping for a moonsault over the ropes and to the outside, knocking O’Connor off his feet with Alissa just barely moving out of the way.

MARK SANCTION: The daredevil doing daredevil things! God, I missed saying that.

Landing on his feet, Carter has some fun with the crowd as he pretends to lift a ball in the air and strike it with an invisible bat. He places his hand above his eyebrows to see how far the “ball” went.

TEMPEST: Just a graceful landing there and the Battlezone is on their feet. Very evident that they’ve missed seeing the daredevil take flight.

Carter returns to O’Connor, lifting him up he walks him to the barricade to the left of them. Austin strikes Dave with a smash of the elbow, sending Dave to be seated on the ringside floor. As his opponent leans against the barricade, Carter lays in a couple more smashes of the elbow before he leaves him as he goes rushing to the opposite side of the ringside area.

MARK SANCTION: Carter with bad intentions…

Carter scraps the sole of his boot against the covered concrete as if he were a bull ready to strike and just like that bull, he charges towards his enemy. When he gets close enough, Carter jumps up and strikes Dave with a dropkick.

TEMPEST: The force behind that one, my god! The god damn barricade moved.

Back up on his feet, Carter lifts Dave up and rolls him back into the ring. Carter enters immediately afterwards, going straight for a front headlock on O’Connor, seemingly not wanting him to catch a breather in this one. Dave, however, answers with two body shots but Carter attacks with another elbow, sending Dave into the ropes. Ozzo grabs hold of Davey’s arm and pulls him towards the opposing side but Dave reverses it any of Carter’s advances and sends Carter towards the ropes. Carter flips forwards with his back ricocheting from the ropes, he lands back on his feet but Dave scouts it quickly. Thanks to his quick thinking and his wife’s shouting, he manages to grab Carter when he bounces back toward him.

TEMPEST: Carter tried to flip through for a reversal but it hasn’t paid off

O’Connor hold Carter for a couple more seconds before slamming his back onto the canvas for a german.

MARK SANCTION: And dropped him right on his head!

TEMPEST: That was well scouted by O’Connor.

MARK SANCTION: I’m sure Carter doesn’t need his cervical vertebrae anyway.

From the suplex, Carter finds himself in the nearest corner with his back turned to O’Connor. This proves to be a mistake as the maniac runs at him, lifting his knee only just to strike the back of the daredevil’s neck. Carter falls out of the corner as Dave covers him for the pin. Aware of his surroundings, Carter quickly grabs onto the ropes the prevent the pin but that doesn’t stop the madman as he’s already dragging Carter to the middle of the square. O’Connor sits Carter up before running to the ropes across from them. As he returns, Davey slides in on his backside, lifting his elbow straight towards Ozzo’s chin! Dave doesn’t waste any time going for the cover.

MARK SANCTION: A variation of O’Connor’s uppercut elbow, is it enough to put Carter away?!

“ONE!
TWO!
KICKOUT!

MARK SANCTION: No! Carter’s chances at the championship are still alive!

After the kickout, Austin stays seated. Unaware that Dave’s behind him ready to strike with an axe kick to the back of his neck, followed by a stiff kick to the middle of the back. Carter goes to his knees but is brought up to his feet for an open handed chop to the chest. O’Connor looks to his wife, who is absolutely enjoying her husband’s comeback.

ALISSA O’CONNOR: Thoir air pàigheadh!

Dave nods as he goes back to Austin, locking both arms around his opponent's waist, his near arm in front of Carter and his far arm behind him. An effortless lift up is all that is needed to slam Carter overhead and back-first down to the mat.

TEMPEST: Look at the power of O’Connor!

MARK SANCTION: And he’s not letting go, maintaining that waistlock.

Mark was right. Dave rolled through while keeping the hold locked in, lifting Carter up again, he proves his strength by walking with the 213 pounder in his grasp. When he’s had enough showboating, Dave goes for another overhead slam.

TEMPEST: Seems like O’Connor’s grip is world class.

Another roll through and it seems Dave wants a trifecta. Lifting big boi Ozzo up, he walks with him to the middle of the ring. Just as he’s about to slam, Carter finds an opening. Rolling on through his legs, it looks as if Carter was going for a roll up but it was only to get away from Dave for the moment. O’Connor tries to maintain his control of the match by rushing towards Carter for an attempt at a lariat but Carter dodges out of the way. Instead, Ozzoman flips forward, allowing for his back to ricochet off the ropes. As he gets back to his feet, he jumps and twists mid-air, hitting O’Connor with a gamengiri to the side of the head, knocking the 6 footer off his feet.

TEMPEST: Those flash shots, smash and grab, pick your move, keep your distance. I said it earlier, this is Carter’s keys to success and he’s mastering it now.

The Madman’s wife looks on in disbelief as her nails have lost themselves in her hair. Her shocked expression turns into an angry one as she slams her palm onto the apron to grab her husbands attention. It’s clear she wants her husband to “suck it up and take control”. Both men find themselves in corners opposing each other, just like how they were at the start of the match. Carter runs towards O’Connor’s corner, a move which Dave dodges. With Austin backfirst in the corner, Dave runs in but is stopped as Carter lifts his left leg. The leg is caught but that makes way for Carter to use his right to strike the head with an assisted enziguri. The kick sends Dave to lean over the top rope with his arms dangling over them. Carter runs to the opposite ride, rebounding off the ropes. When he’s close enough to O’Connor, he jumps up, using the top and second ropes respectfully as he uses the momentum to swing back around for the kick to the bridge of the madman’s nose. After the Feint kick, Carter almost immediately clutches at his neck, feeling the effects from the punishment he’s taken from this match already.

MARK SANCTION: Looks like Carter’s neck physically…

Carter remains outside on the apron, waiting for Dave to get back on his feet. His hands already locked around the top rope, you know what’s coming next.

TEMPEST: Looks like there was a delay there wasn’t there.

MARK SANCTON: ... It’s causing him quite a bit of difficulties here.

With Dave on his feet again, Carter jumps onto the top rope, bouncing off it to meet O’Connor with a springboard forearm smash. Upon landing though, Austin can’t help but tend to his neck.

MARK SANCTON: .SPRINGBOARD! And Oh! The neck is bad.
TEMPEST: Well we often say, take out the arms, take out the legs. Taking out the neck is gonna affect every single thing they do, not just in this match.

MARK SANCTION: And it was that early suplex we said that slammed him right on that neck…

Austin’s not giving up though, not by a long shot. Bad neck and all, he manages to lift Dave off his feet. He steps behind him catches Dave’s neck and applies an inverted facelock underneath his left arm, lifting Dave with his right. Dave, however declines any further moves as he gets him with a knee to the face.

MARK SANCTION: … Oh! Big knee, right to the bridge of the nose.

Carter recovers quickly as he goes to strike O’Connor with his right leg but O’Connor is one step ahead, stopping him in his tracks. Quickly ducking under the leg of Carter, Dave continues the rotation of his body, spinning 360 degrees as he jumps so that his body is somewhat horizontal, he’s about to hit Carter’s face with his heel but Carter backs up in time.

MARK SANCTION: Spinning Heel… Oh! He’s missed it!

Instead, Carter reverts back to the inverted facelock before O’Connor has the time to react, forcing Dave’s neck down and simultaneously extending his left knee so that O’Connor’s back collides with knee. Carter, doesn’t let go however, almost immediately changing position so that he and O’Connor are back to back. Ozzo then falls to his back, dragging Davey down with him, driving his back to the ground. Carter kips-up to his feet. Moving away from his opponent for the moment, he runs towards Dave’s body before doing a backflip on the mat, landing on him.

TEMPEST: Thank you for riding Air Ozzo, Dave!

Austin stays in position for the cover.

“ONE!
TWO!
THR- KICKOUT!

The two men try to collect themselves after the pin attempt. Carter makes sure his nose is still intact while Dave tries to figure out where he is. Though with his wife yelling for him to ‘get up’, it’s possible that he remembers he’s in the middle of the match. Only the next few seconds will tell. Carter gets to his feet first. Realizing his chance to end this, he drags Dave to the nearest corner before exiting the ring to go on the apron.

MARK SANCTION: Carter might be looking for his Star Press here!

He scales the turnbuckles, slowly but surely making his way to the top. Carter’s busy paying attention to his foot placement on the turnbuckle to even notice that O’Connor is back to his feet, only noticing when Dave meets him with an uppercut. Carter currently looks lifeless on the top rope but nonetheless O’Connor continues his attack with another uppercut before scaling up the ropes himself to meet Carter. Davey locks in a waistlock, executing an overhead throw, letting Carter slam onto the mat below.

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor with the belly to belly!

Dave covers Austin, hooking the leg.

“ONE!
TWO!
THR- KICKOUT!

MARK SANCTION: And Carter powers through for the kickout!

REPLAY
TEMPEST: Just look at this sheer power from O’Connor!

A slow-motion recap from just a few seconds ago plays as Dave throws Carter over his head like its nothing!

From the pin, Dave lays into Carter with heavy elbow shots to the head, forcing Carter to go to his side as he tries to cover the onslaught.

TEMPEST: Dave just rains down the elbows!

The assault on Carter continues before O’Connor’s arm encircles Carter's neck, then grabbing his own biceps on the other arm. Dave then places one of his legs across the stomach of his victim. He then places his other leg over his own shin, creating a figure-four with his legs, limiting Carter’s movements as he stays close to his back.

TEMPEST: Oh man…

MARK SANCTION: Dave’s got the Rear Naked Choke on Carter!

Carter gets his right leg loose, using it to closen himself to the bottom rope across from him. As soon as he’s close enough he turns his body to get his left foot on the ropes.

BREAK!

TEMPEST: Very effective use of the legs to will his way out of the chokehold.

After the release of the hold, Carter rolls himself over to a corner, he struggles to get to his feet even though he uses the ropes for help. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ring Dave’s ready to end things once and for all. In his mind, this match has gone on for long enough.

ALISSA O’CONNOR: FINISH HIM!

As if the words were a cue, Dave rushes towards a groggy Carter, lifting his knee mid-way…

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor with the Flying Knee… Wait a minute!

… but Ozzo dodges out of the way in the nick of time, forcing Dave’s knee to collide with the turnbuckles of the corner. Before Dave can even react to his injury, Austin goes behind. Wrapping his arms around his waist, he executes the German Suplex, slamming O’Connor neck first to the mat. A little pay back always hurts.

TEMPEST: Right on the back of the neck!

Outside, Alissa O’Connor is a mixed bag of emotions. Upset that her husband is getting more hurt as the match goes on, Livid that Austin Carter is still on his two feet. Back in the ring, O’Connor goes to his knees, trying to catch his breath. Across from him is a very eager Austin Carter, shaking the cobwebs from his knee. The Battlezone is on their feet.

TEMPEST: Could he be looking for it?

Carter runs towards O’Connor. As he’s about to lift the knee, Dave catches him, powering through for the snap powerslam. Dave keeps the leg hooked for the pin.

MARK SANCTION: Oh! Powerslam! Powerslam from the champion!

“ONE!
TWO!
THR- KICKOUT!

MARK SANCTION: He nearly had it!

Dave comes out of the pin shocked as he falls back onto the mat.

TEMPEST: Look at Dave! Dave just threw his hands up. Dave is in absolute disbelief as per many of us here. I don’t know how Austin kicked out of that one.

Carter’s body looks half dead as Tommy T checks on him to see if he’s okay. Dave’s slow to get to his feet as the crowd is on their feet chanting the words ‘THIS IS AWESOME!’

REPLAY
MARK SANCTION: They’re chanting “This is awesome” and this is why…

A slow-motion recap from just a few seconds ago plays as Carter powers through and delivers a textbook german suplex onto O’Connor.

SEGWAY

MARK SANCTION: And then there was this…

We are shown a recap of a few seconds ago where O’Connor reverses Carter’s running knee attempt with a Powerslam.

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor, a great counter into the Powerslam when it looked like for a moment that Carter was setting up for the ‘Finiscilo!’.

During the replay, Dave lifted Carter up and placed him in the corner. He now, assaults Carter with stiff rights to the chin. Leaving Carter in the corner, Dave runs towards the ropes on the opposite side of the ring.

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor looking for the Flying Knee!

He rebounds them, forcing his disastrous knee into the face of the daredevil.

MARK SANCTION: Oh my God! He connects it!

Carter falls out of the corner, exanimate. Dave drags him into the middle of the ring as Alissa begins her celebration on the outside! Dave covers Carter.

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor’s going to retain here!

“ONE!”

MARK SANCTION: Cover on Carter!

“TWO!
THR- KICKOUT!

As if he were brought back from the dead, Carter’s upper body is lifted off the mat for the kickout.

MARK SANCTION: CARTER KICKED OUT!

Both O’Connor’s look on with disbelief, unaware of how this could be happening right now.

TEMPEST: Disbelief on the faces of Dave and Alissa and for good reason.

CROWD: LET’S GO OZZO CLAP-CLAP CLAP-CLAP-CLAP! LET’S GO OZZO CLAP-CLAP CLAP-CLAP-CLAP!

MARK SANCTION: Everybody here in the Battlezone is on their feet, they cannot believe the move that won Dave the title just got kicked out of by Ozzo.

TEMPEST: Yeah, but does Ozzo even know where he’s at right now? It looks like he’s been in a car accident.

Which seems to reign true as Carter is slow to crawl around the ring, unaware of where he’s going next. Dave, knows this information as he lifts Carter to his feet and leans him against the corner for a second time. The Battlezone begins to sing the melody of Chelsea Dagger to get Carter to respond, to somehow get him back to normal. O’Connor isn’t phased by this, going to the opposing corner.

MARK SANCTION: O’Connor is looking for a second Knee Strike!

Using the turnbuckles as his rebound point, he rushes towards Carter with his knee lifted up from the ground but Carter narrowly dodges it! Sending Dave to collide with the turnbuckles once more.

MARK SANCTION: He’s missed it! He’s missed it for the second time!

Carter doesn’t waste any time as he goes behind, putting his head under the arm of his opponent. Ozzo then lifts O’Connor up, grabbing the waist and thigh as he falls backwards, dropping Dave flat on his back.

MARK SANCTION: Belly-to-back Suplex!

TEMPEST: I think you know what comes next, Mark.

The hold isn’t released as lifts Dave back up, and falls backwards while bridging his back and legs, slamming O’Connor down to the mat.

MARK SANCTION: German Suplex!

TEMPEST: One more…

Carter spins Dave around and puts him in a front facelock, He hooks Dave’s tights and lifts him up, falling, forcing O’Connor on his head.

MARK SANCTION: BRRRAAAIIINNNNBUUUSSSTTTAAAHHHH!!!!

TEMPEST: There it is! The complete Triplo on Dave O’Connor!

The Brainbuster leaves Dave dazed and confused as he falls seated. Carter goes to the corner and prepares for his finish but Alissa O’Connor grabs his boot, preventing him from going anywhere near her husband. Tommy T tries to keep her away but she raises her hand at him.

ALISSA O’CONNOR: Turn around Tommy, this has nothing to do with you!

MARK SANCTION: Did Tickles just look away?! What the hell is going on here!

TEMPEST: Looks like Ticks is part of the O’Connor Payroll.

Alissa climbs the apron, coming face to face with the daredevil. She smirks at him before slapping the taste out of his mouth.

ALISSA O’CONNOR: You think you can come back here and try to take whats ours?!

She enters the ring completely. As Carter’s back is turned, she takes advantage and low blows him. Carter falls to his knees and seemingly to all fours. Alissa backs away from him for a moment…

MARK SANCTION: Oh my god, don’t tell me?!

TEMPEST: Looks like Carter fairytale ending isn’t gonna happen this time.

… she jumps with her foot lifted…

MARK SANCTION: Wait a minute… Carter!

… but Carter is up and meets her with a swift Superkick!

MARK SANCTION: SUUUUUPPPEERRRRKIIICCCCKK!!!!

TEMPEST: Welcome to Chicago, O’Connors!

Alissa rolls out of the ring, but that’s one less O’Connor for Carter worry about. The other one is right behind him, grabbing Carter by his waist he lifts him up. But like before, Carter flips out of harm's way and onto his feet. He quickly turns Dave around, kicking him in the gut. He applies the front facelock, hooking both of O’Connor’s arms before swinging inward as he dives to the ground, twisting on his opponent's neck and in the process, driving his neck and shoulders into the ground.

MARK SANCTION: The Windy City Thrill Connects!

Carter goes for the cover, for what seems like the 3,000th time.

“ONE!
TWO!
THREE!”

DING! DING!

MARK SANCTION: Carter has done it! Carter is the new Television Champion!

From the pin, Carter sits up in shock! As the roar of the hometown crowd is loud enough to blow the roof off the place.

HANA RAMIEREZ: Here is your winner… AND THE NEEEEWWWW… XWA TELEVISION CHAMPION!!!!!! AUSTIN!!! CARTER!!!

Carter gets to his feet with the help of the referee and is given the championship as his hand his raised. He falls to his knees admiring the title he’s spent years fighting to get.

MARK SANCTION: That young man has been through a war tonight and it seems to be all worth it as he’s won the championship he’s wanted ever since coming to the XWA three years ago. A dream fulfilled, as we close out the opening round of the Lord of the Ring Tournament with a NEW Television Champion. I’ve been Mark Sanction, for my Announce Partner, Tempest… Thank you for watching, Goodnight.

Re: [VOTE] Lord of the Ring Opening Round: Dave O'Connor vs. Austin Carter - MAIN EVENT! XWA WORLD TV TITLE MATCH!

Dave O'Connor

What I liked: This was definitely one of the strongest showings of Dave and Alissa's in-ring dynamic. Every time she willed him on from ringside, it showed how integral their partnership is and really emphasized their "brains and brawn" yin-yang. The offense from both guys was engaging and visceral, with a well-thought out pace and a nice flow going for most of the match. Dave, in particular, shone with his--like, this is one of the best examples I've seen of someone who genuinely works an MMA/shoot style and blends different disciplines into his offense.

What I disliked: Now that the "Alissa vs. Bella" story has had a minute to start playing out...I'm gonna be honest, the framing feels a little weird. Like, it seems to me that Dave and Alissa are gunning to be the overarching Big Bad Evil Heels of XWA, and I can totally dig them in that role. Except there's moments here, like the recap of Bella putting Dave through two defenses in one night last Massacre and Dave fighting his way through the pain, that make him feel less like, say, Brock Lesnar the juggernaut tearing his way through everybody and more like 1997 Stone Cold Steve Austin on the verge of a face turn. And sure, that's probably how a guy like Dave would end up turning face someday, but when he's still so new of a character and he's just starting his first real feud as a heel, it's not the right time to make that turn. Also, Alissa's beatdown on Austin toward the end felt...off. Like, what was the referee supposed to be looking at instead of Alissa? How did he not catch her repeatedly hitting Austin or slapping Dave awake and hand out a DQ? Shouldn't she have needed brass knuckles to beat up Austin as much as she did, based off how last Massacre established that she's very much not a wrestler?

Personal Favourite Part: That part where the commentators note how Dave's just fending off Austin with counters at this point, and what it says about Dave's physical state. For all my gripes with the "Dave is hurt" thing, this is the kind of subtle psychology that makes it at least kinda work.

Personal Least Favourite Part:
1...

The following set of left and right hooks force Austin to cradle trying to protect himself.

2...

The following set of left and right hooks force Austin to cradle trying to protect himself.
Pretty sure this is a typo, judging by the second "2..." and the different attack that followed this, but...yeah, the word-for-word repeat of an attack took me out of it for a moment after this had built up a pretty sustained flow.

Constructive Criticism for Next Time: Again, if you're looking to play the top heel of the company, embrace the heel-ness. Find a way to have him fight through the pain, assuming that angle keeps going, while coming off less sympathetic and more like a terrifying Terminator of a man.

Final Comments: I know you went through some rough shit in real life, so thank you for pushing through and still getting something this good sent in.

-------

Austin Carter

What I liked: The pacing is absolutely on point. Things progress at just the right rate from the opening grappling to the diverging styles to the barrage of signature shots towards the end, and as a result, everything flows seamlessly from one spot to the next. Austin's connection to the hometown crowd and Dave's viciousness both come across really well, and the contrast between their flippy and power/MMA styles maps perfectly onto the face-heel dynamic. The commentary peppered throughout does what it needs to in order to help tell the match's story, but doesn't overpower the action itself. And as for the formatting...has that "numbers get bigger as the ref counts up" thing always been there, or did that start here? Because that's a legit clever way to get the tension across.

What I disliked: Again, Alissa's interference didn't quite work for me. If she's getting in the ring, and she's actively grabbing and slapping the wrestlers right in front of the ref, somebody should be getting a DQ. Should have been sneakier about it. Also, Austin kicking out of Dave's finisher was a little weird, but if I'm reading this correctly and Austin fell out of the corner entirely, as in through the ropes and onto the apron, meaning it took longer to drag him all the way to the center of the ring for the pin, then I guess that still protects the Flying Knee enough to get away with it.

Personal Favourite Part:

This is one of those sequences that just flows perfectly from move to move and really shows what both guys are capable of.

Personal Least Favourite Part: Again, the Alissa run-in. Didn't feel plausible that she would be allowed to do all that right in front of Tommy without getting Dave DQ'd.

Constructive Criticism for Next Time: I feel like the replay spots can do more to really expand on the details we get when the move hits the first time. The ones here just seem to repeat what we already know.

Final Comments: A solid return to action for Ozzo here. Well done.

----

The Person Getting My VOTE: Austin Carter

Overall Match Comments: These matches had similar strengths and weaknesses--well-written action and flow, but implausible Alissa interference near the end. Ultimately, this one came down to the storytelling, and where Austin's match stuck to "hometown hero finally wins the TV title he's been chasing for years" all the way through, Dave's kinda contradicted itself by trying to do "Dave and Alissa are heels trying to take everything over" and "Dave soldiers on through injury like a face" all in one go. Luckily, Dave still has the Hardcore Championship, so there's an easy way to work on that and have him show off his toughness without coming off too sympathetic.

All in all, these were solid outings from the both of you, and they were definitely worth that main event spot. I'm looking forward to where y'all take things from here.
